爵士界低音提琴傳奇人物charlie haden在1950年代後期身為引領自由爵士風潮的薩克斯風，小提琴，小號樂手與作曲家ornette coleman所帶領的四重奏樂團的成員的時期，就擁有針對ornette coleman的自由形式的獨奏進行即興的旋律對應，創造出令人大感意外的和聲的功力，而且，他總能在各種不同的演出中去讓突顯低音提琴的地位，帶出低音提琴在爵士演出的樂器中的重要份量，他是一個注重簡單性的大師，他發展出一種獨特的低音提琴演出風格，讓低音提琴可以時而搭配獨奏的演出，時而獨自的進行演出，就如同在他之前的爵士傳奇人物charles mingus，jimmy blanton一樣，charlie haden讓低音提琴從在爵士演出中擔任配搭樂器的角色中得到了解放，以更直接的方式加入樂團的即興演出，為總是在爵士演出中處於和聲概念的角色帶來了革命性的變革。
charlie haden在1960年代組成了liberation music orchestra樂團，樂團的首張同名專輯「liberation music orchestra」結合了當代音樂，實驗性的大樂團爵士樂，西班牙內戰時期的民謠歌曲，日後成為融合音樂與政治行動主義的里程碑大作。charlie haden在1967-1976年間參與了爵士鋼琴大師keith jarrett的三重奏，四重奏，五重奏的演出，接著在1976年與ornette coleman的樂團夥伴don cherry，dewey redman，ed blackwell組成old and new dreams樂團，還在1986年與薩克斯風樂手ernie watts，鋼琴家alan broadbent，鼓手larance marable (*之後由rodney green接任)組成quartet west樂團，帶領爵士樂走進現代主義，在整個1990年代與2000年代初期，charlie haden持續與liberation music orchestra樂團，quartet west樂團進行演出，也與爵士吉他高手pat metheny，bill frisell，爵士鋼琴家hank jones，爵士薩克斯風樂手michael brecker，古巴爵士鋼琴家gonzalo rubalcaba，爵士搖滾吉他手john scofield，爵士小號樂手tom harrell合作。在charlie haden的音樂生涯中也曾與爵士樂界的巨人john coltrane，alice coltrane，archie shepp，chet baker，joe henderson，阿根廷六角形手風琴大師dino saluzzi，巴西吉他手egberto gismonti，葡萄牙吉他手carlos paredes進行音樂冒險。charlie haden榮獲2013年葛萊美獎終身成就獎，也在2014年榮獲法國文化部頒發藝術與文學的騎士勳章。
