出生喬治亞州首府亞特蘭大市，本名jonathan mortimer smith 的lil jon，因為在一些知名的俱樂部擔任dj而發跡，1993 年獲得鬼才jermaine dupri 招攬至so so def 廠牌旗下磨練製作/混音技巧，接著與志同道合的好夥伴big sam 及lil' bo 組織起lil' jon & the east side boyz 團隊，努力推廣dirth south crunk 樂種。1997-2004年間於獨立廠牌陸續推出5張錄音室專輯，締造“get low”、“lovers & friends”、“snap yo fingers” 多首流行榜top10 金曲，更輕鬆入袋百萬張多白金銷量。
